Waterfall, 2022-23
Framed C-print
8” x 10”

This is a photo of a photo I removed from a waiting room at UT Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, as part of my duties as their in-house art handler.  I was asked to remove it because it had been damaged, and I brought it out to the building’s loading dock for disposal.  There, leaning against the metal screen, amongst other utilitarian objects, was this serene waterfall - a dreamlike image of a place impossible to locate anywhere nearby.  In Dallas, I feel as though nature is somewhere else, out of reach, or else difficult to access.  Once, trying to take a hike, I drove about an hour on death trap highways, through miles of suburban subdivisions on 4-lane roads, until finally arriving at a state park ticket booth, only to be turned away because the trails were flooded from recent rains.  There just isn’t much in Dallas that isn’t tamed or paved over.

Anyway, Liliana Bloch invited me to install some artwork in her gallery’s bathroom-turned-project space, and this image, related as it is to flowing water, immediately came to mind.  It’s meant to make you think about the use of water, making water, the pleasant white noise of water falling, and how far away from nature we seem to be in the built environment.
